DJ Nezz decided to try the Cinquian poetry style again.  However, to give himself a challenge or perhaps because he was creatively lazy, he used a random word generator to give him his first word.  It chose Pacifism.

As a refresher, the Cinquain structure is: 5 lines.  Line 1 has one word (the title), Line 2 has two words (describe the title), Line 3 has three words (tell the action), Line 4 has four words (express the feeling), and Line 5 has one word (recalls the title).

Pacifism

Peaceful Protest

Opposition to Violence

Dependant on others goodwill

Oppression

Monday Challenge: Cinquain Poetry September 8, 2008

DJ Nezz and I decided recently that it just isn’t enough to write really bad poetry while you’re bored at work—sometimes, even bad poets need a challenge. Therefore, for the rest of our Year of Bad Poetry, we’ve instituted “The Monday Challenge”, where we choose a theme and make a mockery of a different style of poetry every week. Sure, some “professional” poets may gasp in horror, may curse our names and shake their fists in our general direction…but that’s ok. Because our poems suck. Hard.

Our first Monday Challenge was to tackle the cinquain poem. Based on the traditional Japanese Haiku, the cinquain style of poetry was created by American poet Adelaide Crapsey. Its form consists of the following:

Line 1 is one word (the title)
Line 2 is two words that describe the title.
Line 3 is three words that tell the action
Line 4 is four words that express the feeling
Line 5 is one word that recalls the title

That being said, here’s what we came up with:

Penetrate
Deep, Entrenched
Pricking, prodding, asserting,
My covert undercover heaven
Infiltrated

-Essaytch

Penetrate
Invasive, Hostile
Storming, Breaching, Conquering
Breaking through the resistance
Invade
