Here is a little ditty

To get you through your day:

Behind every cloud is a silver lining..

shiny spaceships ready to steal you away,

poking and prodding my outer reaches.

When you shoot for the moon and miss…

satellites get in the way,

dreams supernova, no television tonight .

The grass is always greener…

laborers manicure the apartments lawn,

the housing crisis keeps me faithful.

United we stand…

waiting in line for the bathroom,

Rocky mountains crumbling wet in my pants.

Welcome, Average Jane…

To the world of “Bright Lights, Big City” Washington!

You’ve traveled far:
from your land of pickup trucks and gun racks,

Elk hunting and hockey moms.

Where you make your choices–
good choices, too! Based on, you know—what’s “right”, and all.

You’ve packed up your herd—

Pipers, Willows, Bristols,
Tracks and Trigs galore—

Left the land of the Inuit,

Out of earshot of those Ruskies across the Aleutians.

And when you arrive,
Will you tell me what to think, how to choose?
Will you make my decisions for me?

Can you stand in my place, amidst the pillars lining the halls of Democracy?

Your tongue is sharp and quick,

Biting, caustic…ballsy.

But I can’t help wondering:
When they ask the tough questions,

Like “What did Delaware?”
Can you respond with more grace and poise
than merely “Idaho—Alaska!”?
