Up before the sun
heading off to the eastside
time to scratch an inch
The needle buzzes
A painful pleasure ensues
addiction is fed
Beautiful colors
art blossoms from my shoulder
pictures come to life

Jack ‘o Lanterns shine
On the stoops of darkened homes,
Testing kids resolve.
Cute kids in costumes,
Princess’, pirates, and more,
Demanding handouts.
Ghouls, ghosts, and goblins
Time for tricking or treating,
Eggs and paper follow.

Her every movement…
Poetry in motion.
My every word…
Verbal commotion.
She glides gracefully on the floor
Like wind over ice, while I
Tumble and fall on
Word assimilation.
Verbal descriptions fail,
Expression captured in rhythm.
Talk is cheap…not worth the
Thousand it takes to paint her
corporeal pictures.
She transports us, dancing meaning
into my syntax.

(From October 29, 2008)
Burning bushes and fiery furnaces,
Works of magic and wonder.
Miracles…of faith.
Splitting waters, breaking bread, raising the dead,
Blind men can see
Faith beyond reason, belief
In the supernatural.
Prophecy and visions,
Images of grotesques, dragons,
War and the end of time.
God becomes man and man is god.
Master of angels and demons
In this reality and the next.
Blessings for works undone and to come.
Preternatural elements, the creation of life.
Foreknowledge of will and mercy with power.
Humans doomed by a bite and saved
By bloody grace, stripped of dignity.
The rules set in stone,
A golden one to rule them all.
Blessed are the meek for they gain the world,
And Justice through a needle’s eye
The mark of beastly allegiance on
Hand or hoof…
Damnation marked.
Lakes of churning fire sizzle with
Tears for those left.
Cool water on heavenly tongues,
Kiss of doves set souls ablaze,
The lash of thorns, god’s smiling face.
My temptation paid…Singing Hosanna!

Relieved at my desk,
No more swinging of the axe.
I still have a job!
Buried under clothes,
Weekend to do the laundry.
Fall cleaning is here!
Unpack my sweaters,
Pull winter coats from storage.
Hooray for the cold!

with my feet on the solid earth
surrounded by gold and blue, mountains and water.
Pressure,
as I marvel at the vast wonder of it all
And laugh as the realization of just what your fingers can do
Amazes me.

Making You See God October 21, 2008

My black Jesus –
Stiff,
Massive head bobbing
on his slender body.
Never forcing himself on you,
but always available
for you to admire or worship.
Mighty in his own right
and sometimes taboo,
He is a symbol for another way…
similar to the others,
but fitted for a different group.
He brings pleasure to those who accept him,
but is not right for everyone.
My black Jesus,
Iconic,
Glorious,
waiting for the call,
always ready and prepared
for those who want him.
And no, that isn’t a euphemism.

Monday Challenge–Parts of Speech Poem October 21, 2008

Selected by the ever-insightful and always on-top-of-it DJ Nezz, this Monday’s challenge was a Parts of Speech poem. The structure of the poem is as follows:
Line 1 = article + noun
Line 2 = adjective + and + adjective
Line 3 = verb + and + verb
Line 4 = adjective + noun or phrase
Line 5 = adjective + noun related to Line 1
The initial challenge here was, of course, to ensure that we actually knew what an article, adjective, noun, etc WERE. Then we crafted our masterpieces:
Fowl Play
A bird
Small and bright
Swooping and dodging
Winged predators in pursuit.
Wicked game.

Monday Challenge–Tyburn Poetry October 15, 2008

This week’s Monday Challenge was chosen by Essaytch–and it was a doozy! DJ Nezz and Essaytch both struggled with it. Here’s how this particular form of poetry works: a Tyburn poem is six lines consisting of 2, 2, 2, 2, 9, and 9 syllables. The first four lines are descriptive words, all of which rhyme. The last two lines also rhyme, and incorporate the words of the first four lines as the 5th through 8th syllables. Sounds easy, right? It proved to be a nearly impossible task:
HALLOWEEN
Putrid
Horrid
Sacred
Lurid
The stink of the putrid, horrid mess
Transforms the sacred to luridness.

SANTA CLAUSE
Airy
Merry
Scary
Hairy
Belief in his airy, merry ways
Always starts a scary, hairy craze!

Poem in on time:
Not a slacker anymore!
Not my best work though…
Had a busy day,
Still managed to slack off some.
I feel slightly bad.
House all to myself,
Unless my roommate comes home.
Here’s hoping she won’t…
