My Favorite Things December 5, 2008

(from Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008)

DJ Nezz was feeling a little inspiration from Ms. Julia Andrews. He blames his upbringing.

Rain on lush foliage and grey Puget waters,

Early morning walks through the streets of Seattle,

Smothering fog whether in the day or at night.

These are a few of my favorite things.

Whole milk vanilla lattes and reading good books,

Daydreaming about nothing while listening to music,

Surfing through Wikipedia and zombies galore.

These are a few of my favorite things.

English breakfast with beer watching West Ham win matches,

Discussing the philosophy behind politics and religion.

Red Robin hot wings, cheese sticks, and Coke.

These are a few of my favorite things.

Sitting in pubs or ferry rides to Victoria,

The city skyline at night and Christmas lights twinkling,

Watching T.V. shows snuggled up with the wife.

These are a few of my favorite things.

When my job sucks,

When I’m pissed off,

When I feel a general malaise.

I simply do some of my favorite things

And then I don’t feel so bad.

Random Word Cinquain – Pacifism December 5, 2008

DJ Nezz decided to try the Cinquian poetry style again.  However, to give himself a challenge or perhaps because he was creatively lazy, he used a random word generator to give him his first word.  It chose Pacifism.

As a refresher, the Cinquain structure is: 5 lines.  Line 1 has one word (the title), Line 2 has two words (describe the title), Line 3 has three words (tell the action), Line 4 has four words (express the feeling), and Line 5 has one word (recalls the title).

Pacifism

Peaceful Protest

Opposition to Violence

Dependant on others goodwill

Oppression

Monday Challenge – Villanelle December 5, 2008

As a fan of Dylan Thomas’ famous “Rage” poem, DJ Nezz decided that it would be a good poem style to tackle.  The villanelle has 19 lines, 5 stanzas of three lines and 1 stanza of four lines with two rhymes and two refrains. The 1st, then the 3rd lines alternate as the last lines of stanzas 2,3,and 4, and then stanza 5 (the end) as a couplet. It is usually written in tetrameter (4 feet) or pentameter. The structure is:

line 1 – a – 1st refrain
line 2 – b
line 3 – a – 2nd refrain

line 4 – a
line 5 – b
line 6 – a – 1st refrain (same as line 1)

line 7 – a
line 8 – b
line 9 – a – 2nd refrain (same as line 2)

line 10 – a
line 11 – b
line 12 – a – 1st refrain (same as line 1)

line 13 – a
line 14 – b
line 15 – a – 2nd refrain (same as line 2)

line 16 – a
line 17 – b
line 18 – a – 1st refrain (same as line 1)
line 19 – a – 2nd refrain (same as line 2)

Freedom is a right, put up a Fight

Freedom is an inalienable right,

Not something just to be given away.

Resist others authority, put up a fight.

Liberty doesn’t just belong to those with might

Or deserved only by those who can pay.

Freedom is an inalienable right.

Responsibility is often treated like a lady of the night

Abused and shrugged off by those who may.

Resist others authority, put up a fight.

The powers that be look down on us with spite,

Stealing what’s ours in a pompous display.

Freedom is an inalienable right.

In the hustle and bustle, it is easy to lose sight.

Easier to just complain, point fingers, but obey.

Resist others authority, put up a fight.

This is not the time to be polite,

No matter what others might say.

Freedom is an inalienable right,

Resist others authority, put up a fight!

A short little ditty

Just to get this done.

The trees are green,

Sky is so blue,

Thinking great thoughts,

And witty prose.

Something about winter,

Golden hues off a pond,

And my malcontent

Staring into a dark abyss.

Being in the holiday spirit and feeling ever so blessed about our wonderous poetic abilities, DJ Nezz and Essaytch have decided to try their hands at another Acrostic Poem. This time using the timely “THANKSGIVING.”

Thinking on this past year, glass

Half empty or half full?

A lot has happened and

Not everything has been positive.

Kind of making you prioritize what’s important.

So much to be

Grateful for, my health, my wife, my family.

In these times of turmoil, recession and the like, a

Variety of pleasure can be found.

Inspiring me to enjoy life to its fullest,

Never giving in the depression or fear,

Giving thanks for every moment.

Election is past,

Things are still in transition,

Waiting for the change.

***

One side is angry,

The other is filled with hope,

Both are expectant.

***

I feel the exact same,

Don’t think anything will change,

Unity won’t come.

Christmas light twinkle

With offending joyfulness.

Holiday melodies waft

Over the window shoppers

As they lug their Christmas cheer

In bags from one store to another.

Windows display traditions

Lost over the years to commercialization.

Beeping horns and sharp remarks

Are shared in holiday greeting.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Happy days are here again,

Time for joy and thanksgiving.

Hedonistic tendencies,

Feasting on delicacies

Of both nature and flesh.

The struggle of early American man

Forgotten by the quest from respite.

Joyous that we have one day to call our own.

Thanks overflowing.
One day of giving, each year,

Ladling soup to the less fortunate

Satiating my moral guilt.

Doing my part,

Just like the pillaged Indians.

History softened over time,

Packaged for the young,

A magicians slight-of-hand,

Seeing what you want to believe.

ADDICTION

Keeping me warm and comforted in winter,

Cool and refreshed in summer:

Yours are the one bean I savor.

Reviving as I’m imbibing,

I recognize my addiction,

My co-dependence on your sweet, sweet aroma.

Java juice: how I love thee!

Wardrobe, thy name is traitor!
Dryer, how dare you?!

After all this time together,

The memories we’ve shared…

The good times, and the bad.

They were my rock, my refuge:

The two things that could keep me

Comfortable in both casuality and formality.

And you’ve RUINED them!

Ruined what we had, what we shared.

The connection broken, left short…

Quite literally.

And now, with cold ankles and self-consciousness

I sit, waiting for someone to notice

My Short Pants.
